U.S. saxophonist Jimmy Greene — well known in Canadian jazz circles for his recent stint on the University of Manitoba’s jazz faculty — and his wife Nelba Marquez-Greene were interviewed today on Good Morning America about the new Sandy Hook Promise initiative.

The project, based at this website, has been launched one month after the Dec. 14 slaying of 20 children (including the Greene’s six-year-old daughter Ana) and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. The project will strive to “support common sense solutions that make my community and our country safer from similar acts of violence,” the website states. ” Sandy Hook Promise is committed to making Newtown be remembered as the place where we came together both as a community…and as a nation, and decided that we must do everything we can to prevent tragedies like this from happening again.  Let Newtown go down in history as the place where real change began.”

More power to these highly inspirational people and their cause. From what I could see, innumerable jazz lovers and fellow musicians the world over supported Greene after the unspeakable happened last month. I hope that they will continue their support of these heroic parents and their good work.
